The Music of Inner Land : Dance with Nature(Music of the Kelabit in Bario)
Written & Illustrated by Leong Yoke Mee @ Ammi
During a field trip to Bario to research for a book, Ammi learned that the traditional musical instruments and dances of the Kelabit, such as the sape, hornbill dance, and warrior dance, are unique and have many stories behind them.
Determined to record Kelabit culture as told to her, Ammi wrote and illustrated this book which is based on local stories, with the names of characters changed. In particular, the main characters are the famous local hornbill solo dancer and her husband, a sape player.
Bario or bariew in Kelabit means wind and refers to the constant wind over the valley surrounded by mountains.
In this fascinating book with Ammi’s illustrations you will feel wind blowing over you and the sound of music in your heart.
