SPECTACLED BEAR (Tremarctos ornatus)

Distribution: Andes Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Habitat: Various sorts of humid and very humid montane cloud forest, elfin forest, puna and paramo grassland, scrub desert.

Diet: Omnivorous diet; fruits, vegetative materials, corns, insects, small mammals and meat.

General Behaviours: Does not hibernate, mainly diurnal and can be nocturnal in certain areas. Presumed breeding pairs can be seen between March and October.

Threats: Killing of bears for as retaliation to livestock or crop raiding.
Hunted for medicinal or ritual purpose.
Illegal trading.
Habitat loss and fragmentation.
