MEANING OF NAME: Originally known as Tan Sri, which is the name of his owner from the Mini Zoo Hot Springs Tawau, he has been re-named as “Sunbearo” in recognition of all the enabling support that the company, Neways has given to the centre.
 
HISTORY: Sunbearo was kept in a Mini Zoo Hot Springs, Tawau, South Eastern of Sabah before he was handed over to the Sabah Wildlife Department and BSBCC. Sunbearo was thin and weighed only 11.6kg. 

PERSONALITY: Sunbearo and his friends took their first step out into the forest enclosure on the 24th of December, 2015. Sunbearo enjoys his daily playtime in the forest with his buddies Susie 2, Loki, Bintang and Kala. When he is in the forest, he will rest in his favourite spot of the day and at times wander around to dig in the soil looking for snacks. He never stops being curious and always wants to explore and touch anything he can. He also has great tree climbing skills. He loves to pick a spot and sunbath in that spot with enjoyment on his face. Sunbearo’s hesitant, curious and expressive face made him stand out from the start. Sunbearo is a foodie! When food is coming, he will growl and give a warning bark at the other bears to show he wants to get the food first. He likes eating very much and he is not particular about the food he eats. He is very playful around Bintang and especially Loki, playing on their hammock together. Sunbearo and Loki will suckle on each other’s ears or mouth as a form of comfort for them. He is still learning the necessary skills to make him become a wild sun bear on his own! It is amazing to see the progress he has made! 

UPDATE: On 10 Jan 2021, BSBCC has released Sunbearo and Loki back into their natural habitat. After years of rehabilitation, evaluating the behaviour as sun bears and their taking into account of their social characteristics, it was decided that Sunbearo and Loki will also be released back into the forest together.  

At 6.48 a.m., the door towards freedom opened up. Sunbearo and Loki took their time to come out of the boxes. Both of them appeared to have settled down, and they walked out of the boxes gracefully. Sunbearo was first, and Loki was right behind his tail. Sunbearo and Loki were sniffing their new surrounding without feeling startled. Loki continued sniffing and walking on the opened pathway for them while Sunbearo stayed around for thirteen minutes sniffing the around before walking into the forest.

MAKSUD NAMA: Dahulunya dikenali sebagai Tan Sri, nama asalnya diambil sempena pemiliknya dari Mini Zoo Hot Springs Tawau. Namun, dia telah dinamakan semula kepada "Sunbearo" sebagai penghargaan kepada syarikat Neways atas sokongan mereka kepada pusat ini.

SEJARAH: Sunbearo pernah dipelihara di Mini Zoo Hot Springs, Tawau, Sabah sebelum diserahkan kepada Jabatan Hidupan Liar Sabah dan BSBCC. Ketika tiba, Sunbearo sangat kurus dan hanya seberat 11.6kg.

PERSONALITI: Pada 24 Disember 2015, Sunbearo dan rakan-rakannya mengambil langkah pertama keluar ke dalam hutan. Dia sangat menikmati masa bermainnya di dalam hutan bersama sahabat baiknya Susie 2, Loki, Bintang, dan Kala.

Ketika berada di dalam hutan, Sunbearo suka berehat di lokasi kegemarannya setiap hari dan sesekali merayau untuk menggali tanah mencari makanan. Dia tidak pernah berhenti untuk ingin tahu dan sentiasa mahu meneroka serta menyentuh apa sahaja yang boleh. Keupayaan memanjatnya juga luar biasa! Dia suka memilih tempat tertentu untuk berjemur dengan ekspresi kepuasan di wajahnya.

Sunbearo mudah dikenali dengan wajahnya yang penuh ekspresi, ragu-ragu tetapi sangat ingin tahu. Dia juga seorang yang kuat makan. Apabila makanan tiba, dia akan mengeluarkan bunyi geraman dan menyalak untuk memberi amaran kepada beruang lain sebagai tanda bahawa dia mahu mendapatkan makanan terlebih dahulu. Sunbearo tidak memilih makanan dan akan makan apa sahaja yang diberi.

Dia juga sangat suka bermain dengan Bintang, dan Loki. Mereka sering bermain bersama di atas buaian dan kadangkala menghisap pada telinga atau mulut satu sama lain sebagai cara mencari keselesaan. Sunbearo masih dalam proses mempelajari kemahiran yang diperlukan untuk hidup sebagai beruang liar, dan perkembangannya sangat mengagumkan!

INFO TERKINI:
Pada 10 Januari 2021, BSBCC berjaya melepaskan Sunbearo dan Loki kembali ke habitat semula jadi mereka. Setelah bertahun-tahun menjalani pemulihan, menilai tingkah laku serta mengambil kira hubungan sosial mereka, Sunbearo dan Loki akhirnya bersedia untuk kembali ke hutan bersama-sama.

Tepat jam 6.48 pagi, pintu kendang pemindahan dibuka. Sunbearo dan Loki mengambil masa mereka untuk keluar dari kendang tersebut. Kedua-duanya kelihatan tenang, berjalan keluar dengan penuh keyakinan. Sunbearo melangkah keluar dahulu, diikuti oleh Loki yang mengekori rapat di belakangnya.

Mereka terus menghidu persekitaran baru tanpa rasa takut. Loki meneruskan penerokaan sepanjang laluan terbuka sementara Sunbearo mengambil masa 13 minit untuk mencium sekeliling sebelum akhirnya berjalan masuk ke dalam hutan.

Sunbearo kini benar-benar bebas!
