Lumaku

Year of birth: 2025

History:

Lumaku’s story began long before his rescue. After a public complaint was made, authorities inspected a theme park on the northern coast of Sabah and discovered a young sun bear being kept illegally for exhibition. The bear, later named Lumaku, had been raised in captivity since he was a cub after reportedly being purchased from villagers for around RM1000.

On 8 April 2026, Lumaku was rescued by the Sabah Wildlife Department and safely transferred to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre as Rescue No. 73. Estimated to be around 1 year old and weighing approximately 15 kg, Lumaku arrived active, alert, and physically healthy. Having spent most of his young life around people, he displayed a friendly and curious nature, often carefully observing his surroundings and the people caring for him.

During his time in captivity, Lumaku was fed fried and boiled chicken — far from the natural diet of a wild sun bear. Although he appears healthy, he has never had the opportunity to properly develop natural behaviors such as climbing, foraging, and exploring forest environments. Under the dedicated care of the BSBCC team, Lumaku will now begin a gradual rehabilitation journey to help him rediscover the instincts and behaviors every sun bear should have.

As Rescue 73, Lumaku’s arrival is also an important reminder that keeping sun bears as pets or for exhibition is both illegal and harmful. Through education and awareness, BSBCC hopes more people will understand the importance of protecting these remarkable bears in the wild, where they truly belong.
