Distribution: Central China

Habitat: Temperate montane forests with dense bamboo stands.

Diet: 99% on bamboo. Occasionally will go for crops and human garbage when bamboos not available (die off).

General Behaviours: Mating season from March to May. Does not hibernate. Can climb trees although infrequently compared to other bear species.

Threats: Small isolated populations in restricted home range.
Degraded habitat
Accidental killing by snare traps meant for other animals.

Conservation Status: CITES Appendix I
Endangered (IUCN Red List, assessed in 2016)
