𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐥: Sun bears have an acute sense of smell, which helps them locate food and avoid predators. Their olfactory abilities are crucial for survival in their dense forest environment.

𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝: Sun bears are omnivorous. They primarily feed on fruits, insects, small animals, and honey. Their strong claws allow them to dig into termite mounds and tree bark to find tasty treats.

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: Despite their stocky build, sun bears are skilled climbers. They can ascend trees to access fruits and honey, and even build nests. Their curved claws and strong limbs aid in this ability.

International Sun Bear Day 2024 “Wildlife Protection Starts with Appreciation”

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is celebrating its 8th International Sun Bear Day today (16th May 2024) with the theme “Wildlife Protection Starts with Appreciation”. The celebration which is taking place at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, Sepilok, Sandakan hopes to encourage all nations to appreciate wildlife and support the efforts to conserve them. During the celebration, the Centre is also launching its mutual partnership with Kolej Vokasional Sandakan 2. The industry-institute partnership will benefit both parties through sharing of knowledge and expertise. Some 50 students and teachers from 4 schools; SK Batu 16 Gum-Gum, SK Seri Manis, SK Sakilan Desa, and SM St. Michael, Sandakan are participating in activities organized including Sun Bear Explorace and the Sun Bear Enrichment Making activity.

Prior to the celebration, online contests were posted on BSBCC’s Facebook page to encourage public engagement with BSBCC. These contests which include Caption the Photo contest, Infographic Poster contest, Collage Making contest and Little Sun Bear Video Contest are open for local and international participants.

Pre-event activities were also held on the 11th and 12th May 2024 for walk-in visitors to the Centre where they get to participate in the Sun Bear Challenge activity that promotes better understanding on the sun bears’ ecology, behavior and threats. The Centre also offered a canvas bag coloring activity for children who visited the Centre during that weekend.

Sun bears are the smallest bears among the 8 living bear species in the world. They are listed as Totally Protected species in Sabah under the Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. Despite its protection status, the species is continuously poached for their body parts including paws, claws, canine and gallbladders, while sun bear cubs are traded or kept as exotic pets.

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is currently home to 43 sun bears rescued from pets across Sabah. The Centre provides a second chance for these bears to return to the wild through a rehabilitation programme, apart from providing care and an improved long-term living environment for ex-captive sun bears that cannot be released. Since the Centre was established in 2008, a total of 69 sun bears were rescued and 12 individuals has been reintroduced back to the wild.

Rudy in Pen H

One small step for bear. One giant leap for bear-kind

Today, we introduced Rudy into a bigger enclosure! She is an anxious and shy bear especially to new things. First day out was not successful as she was too nervous to step outside. But 2nd day was much better! Took her a couple tries but she managed to venture out into the forest enclosure eventually.

We hope that she will explore more and fingers crossed she climbs a tree!!

Big thank you to our supporters - Yayasan Hasanah , Kementerian Kewangan , Yayasan Sime Darby - for allowing us to provide the best welfare for all our resident bears. We are still in the process of letting Rudy get used to her new enclosure so do stay tuned to more updates.

Susie Eye Examination

On Labor Day, we shined a spotlight on our beloved sun bear, Susie, and the incredible team that's ensuring her health and happiness.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Chiang (Hospital Duchess of Kent) and his dedicated team of ophthalmologists who took time out of their busy schedules to conduct a thorough eye examination for Susie.

Back in February during her health screening, our team noticed a small focal cataract in Susie's right eye. With Dr. Chiang's expertise, we've learned that the cataract is still immature, which is promising news! The recommendation is clear: cataract removal surgery. And the prognosis? A good vision recovery is on the horizon for Susie following the procedure.

We are committed to giving Susie the best care possible and will do our best to do so!

Tenom's Journey: A Soft Release Tale

Tenom, our almost 1 year old Bornean sun bear cub, is adapting to her natural habitat in Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Her resilience and determination inspire us all.

Tenom's health remains robust. Daily forest walks help her reconnect with her wild instincts. The transition hasn't been easy, but she faces each day with courage.

Today, Tenom achieved a remarkable feat- she climbed a tree! Not just any tree, but one that stands over 30 meters tall. Her agility and determination is amazing.

As Tenom continues her soft release, we hold our breaths, hoping she thrives. We are all rooting for her success and always pray for her safety and well-being. A big thank you to our supporters Yayasan Hasanah, Kementerian Kewangan, Yayasan Sime Darby, Bask Bear Coffee and Planet Wild for giving a second chance to Tenom to have a better life.

Labour Day Activities

Happy Labour Day!

The biggest shout out to the back bone of our centre - our Bear keepers! Their work, effort and passion to take care of all our 43 resident bears have been amazing and never ceases to amaze us.

Today on this very hot day, not only have our keepers been working tirelessly, 3 naughty bears have been spotted working on digging a very dangerously big hole! Their keepers immediately had to fix this before further damage is done and that will compromise the staff and bears' safety.

A very big thank you again to Yayasan Hasanah, Kementerian Kewangan, Yayasan Sime Darby for always supporting our work, enabling us to carry out maintenance work on the enclosures therefore always providing a safe environment for all our bears!

P.S. These 3 cute culprits are wanted. May look innocent but the mud on their faces has "guilt" written all over them!!

#bsbcc #sunbear #welfare #conservation

BJ the digging machine! May look small and cute but managed to do the most damage out of all three.

Betung the cheerleader! Backs Kipaku up when he is doing something naughty. Cleanest out of all 3, mostly because she is standing on the sidelines holding pom-poms.

Kipaku the instigator! Looks the most innocent out of all three. Instigates BJ to dig profusely and gets Betung in trouble with him. He did not win this digging competition.
