OUTREACH PROGRAMMES: January-February 2019
It was a great opportunity to share our work on sun bear conservation among oil palm plantation managers and workers during a Safety and Health Campaign organised at the IOI Leepang Palm Oil Mill, Kinabatangan, Sabah on the 14th February 2019. BSBCC's representative, Gloria Ganang shared on challenges currently faced by sun bears in Sabah and BSBCC's efforts to protect them during the talk session. An exhibition booth was also set up to display information and specimens related to sun bears and BSBCC's efforts in protecting them. A group of kids from the plantation school came to visit the booth to learn about sun bears too! Among other governmental department and NGOs present were Sabah Wildlife Department, Sabah Forestry Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Sukau Health Clinic, Sukau Police Station and HUTAN-Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme.
In addition, on 20th of February 2019, BSBCC joined an outreach to SK Lahad Datu IV in the district of Lahad Datu, Sabah. The outreach which coincided with the school Environmental Science Day also participated by HUTAN-Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme in which the school’s programme received an outstanding reception among the teachers and more importantly, the students. The programme filled with several educational activities such as talks for the Science Club students, exhibitions, handicraft booth and also interactive games for the students. It is a great experience for both the organizers and also students to participate in the programme and it is really hope that the programme successfully achieved the objectives; most importantly is to educate the younger generations to care and love to our wildlife and environment.
