Solo Artist's Statement - Jane Tan
LIGHT, SHADOWS, WATER AND REFLECTIONS
This exhibition features works by Jane Tan Giok Tjeng. It is Jane’s third solo exhibition presenting 18 artworks, painted from 2018 to 2021.The exhibition entitled ‘Light, Shadows, Water and Reflections” that includes 3 series: Light Shadow Series (6 works), Water Series (7 works), and Water & Reflection Series (5 works). This body of work is primarily oil and acrylic on canvas. Jane is a seasoned traveler, she seeks to share the beautiful and interesting moments when visiting exciting places. She was enchanted by the beauty of nature, interplay of light and shadow on visual elements, majestic mountains, scenes along running streams, sea crashing against the rocky shores, reflections on the water and the people in daily routine. Overwhelmed with emotions and inspired, she depicted her observations in paintings. Adopting a representational style, she lays paints in multilayers to create depth enhancing the paint quality and building up surfaces. Light, shadow, water and reflection appear vivid in the eyes of the artist. Awareness of the emotions which nature gives and holds a feeling of gratitude towards the wellbeing of Mother Nature. About The Artist - Jane Tan Giok Tjeng
Jane Tan Giok Tjeng is an Indonesian born Malaysian artist. She received her early art training at Chelsea College of Arts in London. In the early 90s, after her children were all grown up, she started painting again with Chinese ink painting to begin with. Inspired by the influences of Western and Chinese painting techniques, Jane Tan combines the Western bold brushwork with the Oreintal minimalist composition to convey a vivid and realistic style.
Most of Jane Tan’s artworks are in oil and mixed media. She also does Chinese ink paintings and sometimes she creates works by applying batik painting techniques on rice paper. Jane Tan had held two solo exhibitions in 2012 and 2021 respectively. In 2016, Jane Tan was awarded the First Prize for “Beautiful China in My Eyes--Year of Silk Road” organized by The China National Tourist Office.
Jane has been actively participating in local as well as international art exhibitions since 1995. Her artworks have been exhibited in China, Japan, Nepal, Philippine, Singapore, Myanmar, India, Thailand, Korea and the United Kingdom. The highlights among these exhibitions include “Art with Heart” at PETRONAS Gallery, 2004; “Paintings and Calligraphy Exhibition” at the National Art Gallery, 2007; “Colour of Pelangi” at Prima Gallery, 2016; The 9th Asian International Art Exhibition held in China, 2018 and Bagan Art Expo 2020 in Myanmar.
