Sun Bear Day 2019
End Illegal Hunting!
Visitors, guests, and visitors were invited to celebrate the annual Sun Bear Day together with our CEO and Founder, Dr. (Hons) Wong Siew Te.
‘End Illegal Hunting’ was chosen to be the main theme in this 3rd year of celebrating Sun Bear Day. Illegal hunting has been identified as one of the major cause of decline in sun bear population, thus leaving them as Vulnerable in the IUCN Redlist. The Sun Bear Day is a very good approach to attract more people especially the local to join and support us to protect this beautiful creature. Several local primary schools around Sandakan district had been invited to join our programme throughout the day; the Sun Bear Explorace, a competition for the children to gather information and learn more about sun bears. A short drama competition with the theme related to end illegal hunting was also one of the main highlights; a platform to improve their understanding about the plight of the sun bear and also sharpening their co-curricular skills. Everyone got the opportunity to get involved for a hands on experience to make some of the bears favorite enrichment, an essential in helping the sun bears to grasp the skills they need to live in the wild. And of course, the most handsome sun bear in the world, Sunny the Sun Bear also made his special appearance throughout the event. On top of that, the event got a surprise visit from the Member of Parliament of Sandakan, YB Vivian Wong Shir Yee, who was guided around the centre personally by the birthday man, Founder and CEO Dr. Wong Siew Te.
