BSBCC BEAR 1
LUNA
LUNA
AGE: 1 year old
SEX: Female
MEANING OF NAME: Her name was decided through a public vote on BSBCC’s social media platform. Luna is the daughter of Bintang (Rescue number 39). Bintang means star in Malay and Luna means moon in Latin. Their name is relative and indicates that they are mother and daughter.
HISTORY: Daughter of Bintang (Rescue Bear 39). She was born on 20th May 2021 at BSBCC. Bintang, the mother, was observed nursing and caring for her newborn attentively. However, on day 8, the cub reduced the frequency of suckling on her mother. After isolating the cub from her mother, our veterinarian took the cub for a quick examination. The cub was down with hypothermia (low body temperature) and had severe ear injuries and skin infection. Due to this, the tough decision to separate the cub from the mother was done. During that time, she weighed 353g and required immediate medical attention. She is most definitely a fighter as she survived through many critical moments whereby she has placed in the oxygen chamber for several times. Now, her wounds have healed up and she has opened her eyes on day 28. Unfortunately she lost both of her external ears.
Personality: Luna is a gentle yet playful bear cub. The cub keeper provides her with different types of enrichment in her den to encourage her natural bear behaviour and fill her day. Luna is a contented bear cub. She loves to try everything new! However, when she sees the new enrichment for the first time, she will remain alert, and she will paw it to make sure the enrichment is fine and then explore it. A simple enrichment can get her through a day! Luna likes to play with towels, and she will bring the towel to where she wants to sleep. When Luna is scared by a noise, she will hide in the basket or stay behind, but she will look around and check the surroundings.
Bringing Luna to the forest walk is a routine that allows her to learn forest skills. Every day, Luna walks into the forest happily, hops around, unable to conceal her excitement. Luna likes to stop and explore along the way, and she will sniff, dig and forage everywhere! Luna has soil eating behaviour. She will dig into the soil and taste it. Luna’s climbing skills are improving with daily practice in the forest. She would pick her favourite trees then climbs up to the trees to dig and tear them up. Sometimes she climbs and crosses to another tree too!
Luna is growing and learning forest skills. She still has a long way to go, but it’s fantastic to see her transformation. We will continue to do our best to make sure she grows healthy and have a fulfilling life as a sun bear.
Update:
We are very sorry to announce that sun bear cub Luna passed away in the early hours of yesterday (19th September). Indeed, it was a sad day for all of us at BSBCC. Luna has involved in an unexpected bear fight and suffered several bite wounds. Immediate treatment was provided but the wounds, unfortunately, got infected resulting in septicemia (blood infection). She was later found dead on the 19th of September 2022 at 2.20am.
All of our staff were devastated to hear of this loss. Thank you to all of our keepers for trying their absolute best to maintain her health. Luna will be deeply missed by all of us here at BSBCC.
RIP Luna
