On November 20th-24th, of 2017, BSBCC was invited by IJM Plantations Berhad to the Environmental Outreach program (Wildlife Awareness) in their two-region area. It took about 4 and a half hours to arrive at the Sugut regions estate by car. The main purpose of this program is to create awareness about our protected species and also share information and knowledge about sun bears. The BSBCC team prepared an exhibition booth to help the audience understand better about the programme. The audience comprise IJM Plantations estate Executives and staff in two regional estates in Sabah - Sugut regions (8 estates) and Labuk regions (3 estates). At the same time, we also held an awareness programme with the Humana Schools (A school for children of foreign plantation workers in IJM estates). A lot of activities were held during the programme, including talks, video show, sun bear mascot activities and a visit to exhibition booths. Besides BSBCC, our partners, the Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU), were also invited to this program. Huge thanks to IJM Plantations Berhad for inviting us as well as for the continuous support given! We were really glad to see people learning more about Mother Nature.
This week, the BSBCC's Education Team head to Lahad Datu district together with our partner from Hutan - Kinabatangan Orang Utan Conservation Programme (KOCP). This Environmental Education outreach programme was organized by Hutan-KOCP and they invited BSBCC and Sabah Wildlife Department to participate in their programme. The first school we visited was SK Sabah Cocoa, Lahad Datu which is a rural school located in the middle of a plantation area. It is a low enrolment school (Sekolah Kurang Murid), only 39 pupils enrolled. The second school visited was SK Binuang, Lahad Datu. This school is about 15-20 minutes drive from Lahad Datu Town. Various activities were held during this programme such as talks, games, video show and colouring activity. Each participating organization also set up educational booth for the students and teachers to visit. Thank you Hutan-KOCP for inviting us to be part of the programme and we look forward to join more programmes with our partners in the future.
On the 29th September 2017, BSBCC was invited to SJK (C) Chi Hwa, Sandakan to set up an educational booth during their sports carnival. Besides BSBCC, other organizations and local companies in Sandakan such as WWF, Rainforest Discovery Centre, Artlex Centre, Maybank, and a few more were also invited to participated in this event. During this carnival, all of the students, teachers and parents have the chance to visit all the booths from participating organizations and companies. There were also activities held in each booth such as answering quizzes. All of the students enjoyed in this carnival and we hope that they learned more about sun bears today!
On the 19th of September 2017, BSBCC was invited to SK Kepangian, Ranau to organize a Wildlife Awareness Programme. It is about 4 and half hours drive to this school from Sandakan district. This school is one of the rural schools in Ranau district with 13 teachers and 107 students ranging from 7 to 12 years old. A lot of activities were held during the programme such as talks, video show, wildlife games, wildlife colouring activity and visit to exhibition booths. Besides BSBCC, our partners which were the Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) and Hutan - Kinabatangan Orang Utan Conservation Programme (KOCP) also joined us. We were really glad to see the students learning more about the Mother Nature.
After Tawau District, the BSBCC Education Team continue organising another Awareness Programme at Sandakan District. The schools visited in Sandakan District were SMK Konven St. Cecilia, SK Sungai Tiram, SK Batu 16 Gum-Gum and SK Mawar. This is the last environmental education outreach organized by BSBCC for this year. In this programme, we also invited our partners to participate. They were the Sabah Wildlife Department, Hutan-Kinabatangan Orang Utan Conservation Programme, Wildlife Rescue Unit, Reef Guardian and Borneo Bird Club. Many activities were held during this programme such as wildlife colouring, talks, games, video show and also exhibitions. Many thanks to the schools in Sandakan for welcoming us and also our partners for always supporting the BSBCC! We hope to continue our outreach programme next year and more schools to be visited. We believe that environmental education is vital to increase awareness especially among the young generations.
On the 25th of August 2016, the BSBCC was invited by SMK Beluran, Beluran to their school to set up educational booth for their students. During that day, the school were having programme in conjuction with Malaysia's Independence Day. All of the students including teachers at SMK Beluran were able to visit our booth and learn new things about the environment especially about sun bears. Thank you for inviting us!
It was the first time for BSBCC education team to organize and join an educational outreach programme at Tawau and Semporna area. Starting from 7th August until 12th August 2017, there were six schools (primary and secondary) targeted for this programme. This event was also accompanied by our partners from the Sabah Wildlife Department - Tawau district, HUTAN-Kinabatangan Orang Utan Conservation Programme (KOCP), Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) and Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC). As part of our mission to promote the wildlife conservation by teaching young children about the beauty and value of our wildlife, various activities were conducted for the students such as exhibitions, wildlife talks, documentary screening, colouring activity and environmental games. Hopefully with this kind of awareness programme, young kids would be more eager to learn more about our wildlife and in future, contribute to any conservation work.
Today BSBCC was invited to do an awareness programme on sun bear in Sandakan Baptist Church Kindergarten. Approximately 75 students aged four to six were involved in this programme. The students and teachers got excited and eager to learn more about the sun bears. The programme started with a story telling (The Wild Tree Houses) session by Ms. Gloria, Environmental Education Executive. After listening to “The Wild Tree Houses” story, Ms. Gloria conducted a wildlife game for the students. Our sun bear mascot, Sunny was also present to help the students understand better about physical characters of a sun bear. We also set up display booth at the school. All of the students enjoyed their time learning about the environment and wildlife species through exhibitions. We hope that they can gain more knowledge on the importance of protecting the environment and our precious wildlife species. Thanks for inviting us!
From the 10th July 2017 to 12th July 2017, BSBCC education team visited 3 schools at Nabawan District for Wildlife Education and Awareness Programme. Nabawan district is a small town in Interior Division of Sabah (southern part) and the local communities in this area are predominantly Murut. The first school we visited for this outreach is SMK Nabawan, Nabawan. Mr. Henry Anandan, principal of SMK Nabawan was very excited with this program and he was personally wanted to have a sun bear as a conservation mascot for their school. Together with our partners from HUTAN-Kinabatangan OrangUtan Conservation Programme (KOCP) and Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU), various activities were held for the students such as exhibitions, wildlife talks, documentary screening, environmental games and a special activity for the Wildlife Junior Rangers- sun bear oil painting. BSBCC also donated three bear sculptures to this school to be installed at their garden area.
On the second day of this education outreach programme, BSBCC's education team together with HUTAN-KOCP and Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) gathered at SMK Nabawan II, Nabawan to bring awareness on wildlife found in the forests of Sabah. We set up a booth alongside HUTAN-KOCP and WRU to share our bear stories with the students. At the same time, we gave an inspiring talk to students on our knowledge and experience about sun bears and our ongoing effort of saving them. About 50 students from the Wildlife Junior Ranger and Nature Club participated in the talk session. We had lots of fun spending time with these young students as they were very enthusiastic to learn about the wildlife in Sabah. Many thanks to SMK Nabawan II, HUTAN-KOCP and WRU for making today's activity possible.
Our last school of outreach programme for this week in Nabawan distirict was SMK Sepulot which is situated almost from 47km Nabawan town. The programme started from 8.30am until 1.00pm. The Wildlife Junior Ranger and Nature Club students had lots of fun learning from all the talks, exhibition and educational activities. We had lots of fun spending time with these young students as they were very enthusiastic to learn about the wildlife in Sabah. Hope they grow to love and protect our native animals. We were grateful to partners from HUTAN-KOCP and Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) involved with this programme. Besides that, many thanks to Sabah Education Department for the approval given to run this programme. It was a big success.
Starting from 16th June - 20th June 2017, BSBCC Education team joining the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD); Kinabatangan district for the CEPA & CEPA Kit Programme. CEPA stands for the "Conservation, Education, Participation and Awareness" Programme is a platform to convey knowledge and create awareness on the importance of wetlands among its inhabitants. With the theme of environmental education, this programme aims to deliver message and spread the knowledge of biodiversity conservation among local communities and school kids. Three schools are selected along the Ramsar site in Kinabatangan area which are SK Tidung Tabin, SK Tundon Bohangin and SK Sri Ganda. Hopefully, with this programme we can help to enhance the community engagement in wildlife conservation in Sabah.
After the school outreach programme at Ranau District where the majestic Mount Kinabalu lies on, our team continue to go for outreach to Kota Belud District from the 9th of April to 13th of April 2017. This time, the outreach programme is organized by our partner HUTAN – KOCP and we were glad to participate in this programme. We visited 5 different schools near Kota Belud Town (SMK Taun Gusi II, SK Sembirai, SMK Pekan II Kota Belud, SK Pekan Kota Belud, SMK Arshad). This outreach programme were participated by Wildlife Rescue Unit, the Sabah Wildlife Department and BSBCC. Many interactive activities conducted and a few talks from each participating organisations were delivered during this programme. We were happy that the students enjoyed the programme and we hope that they learn more about the Mother Nature. Thanks to our partner HUTAN – KOCP for inviting us and we look forward to join more awareness programme in the future!
