On the 20th September 2023, after yesterday’s community outreach programme, the BSBCC Education Unit organized a school outreach program in the same community area, SK Sri Darun, Tungku, Lahad Datu. The programme went well, and we were pleased with the students' enthusiastic response and active participation. We really appreciate the support of the school's community in making this programme a success. After the community program at Kinabatangan District in February 2023, we extended our reach to the community members of Kampung Sri Darun, Kampung Lung Pias and Kampung Sepebpul Satu, Tungku in our most recent community outreach program today. The targeted community are living close to a few forest reserves, including the famous Tabin Wildlife Reserve where we reintroduced our rehabilitated rescued sun bears. Apart of the exhibitions and talks, we also conducted a forum session with representatives from community wildlife rangers: Aki Keramuak and the 7 Team sharing their perspectives and experiences in handling elephant conflict to the community members, which is the main issue that exist in the area. In overall, the reception and reaction from the community members are positive and engaging. Thanks to all departments, NGOs, community members that supported this event and make it a success. On the 16th of September 2023, BSBCC was invited to set up exhibition booth at SJK(C) Lok Yuk, Sandakan as a part of the Children's Day celebration by the school. We were invited to attend the World Elephant Day Celebration at Kalabakan District, Sabah on the 14-15 September 2023. The 2-days celebration aimed to raise awareness on elephant conservation among the primary and secondary students in the area, which was also attended by some of the local community. This is a golden opportunity for BSBCC to do a sharing session about the sun bear conservation work done by us since 2008. Of course, wildlife conservation is a collective effort by everyone, and we can start by educating our youngsters. Thank you, Sabah Wildlife Department, for the opportunity given to us and for inviting us to the celebration! Day 1 : An Ecosystem that Provides This year, BSBCC is participating in the Youth Forum session at the International Conference on Heart of Borneo (HoB): An Ecosystem that Provides. Day 2: A Ecosystem that Provides The Youth Forum session provides a platform to inspire more youth to be involved in or support conservation work. It is great that the youth are able to share their stories and passion, discuss environmental and conservation issues through workshops and suggest ways in which youth can play a role in addressing environmental and conservation issues. Thank you to everyone who visited and stopped by our booth during this two-day event. We hope that everyone will take their own role to help us spread awareness about sun bears and their habitat. Save Sun Bear! This week, our Education team visited the Gilwell Scouts Nature Park in Sandakan to be part of Scout Camp 2023 (Sibuga District). This camp comprises around 200 scouts from different primary and secondary schools in Sandakan. Our team was assigned a two-hour time period for educational activities. Besides an informative talk, our team conducted a Bingo game and a sun bear yell contest. During the closing ceremony, a booth for the exhibition was also set up. This event gave us the chance to raise public awareness of nature and wildlife conservation as well as introduce BSBCC's efforts to conserve the world's smallest bear, the sun bear. Yesterday on the 15th of July 2023, we participated in the Heart of Borneo (HoB) Roadshow organised by the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) of Sabah Forestry Department to Pinangah Zone, Sabah. The event was attended by around 200 members of 15 villages in the Pinangah Zone. The zone, surrounded by forest reserves was definitely a good target for environmental and wildlife education programs. For BSBCC, this event provided an excellent opportunity to engage the community members as the event itself involved 15 villages, reaching multiple targets in one single event. We are very grateful for this invitation which was good cooperation between the members of Sabah Environmental Education Network (SEEN) and yielded the maximum effect on the communities in the area. Thanks, Sabah Forestry Department for the invitation! |
