Welcoming Rescue No. 69 - King Kwong
We are happy to announce that we have received our 69th rescued sun bear at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). His name is Kwong, and he is a male bear, around 2 years old, with a body weight of 22.5 kg.
Kwong arrived at our centre on the 1st of August 2023, after a long journey from Kota Kinabalu. Our team went to the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (LKWP) who had been caring for him since September 2022 to transport him back to his new home.
According to the history provided by Jabatan Hidupan Liar (Keningau), Kwong was bought by a villager from Keningau out of sympathy to avoid being killed for food. The villager hand raised him for several months before surrendering him to JHL on the 20th of September 2022.
Despite his traumatic past, Kwong was in good health condition when he arrived at our centre. He was bright, alert, calm and tame. He showed no signs of aggression or fear towards humans. He was curious and interested in his new surroundings. Currently, Kwong is still not used to his new home but hopefully with the efforts of our team he will feel right at home.
Kwong will undergo a quarantine period of at least 30 days before he can join the other bears in our forest enclosures. During this time, he will receive a thorough health check and parasite treatments. He will also be given enrichment items to stimulate his natural behaviours and keep him occupied.
We hope that Kwong will soon adapt to his new home and enjoy his second chance at life in the forest. We thank JHL Keningau and Lok Kawi Wildlife Park for their cooperation and support in rescuing and transferring Kwong to us. We also thank our supporters and donors – Yayasan Hasanah and Yayasan Sime Darby for making our work possible. With their help we are able to rescue and give a better life to more bears like Kwong.
Please stay tuned for more updates on Kwong’s progress and journey to freedom.
