Thanks to my friend, who works as a tour guide, I came to know about this BSBCC. Knowing my passion on animals, he shared some information about volunteerism in BSBCC.
I have served as a volunteer for two weeks at BSBCC. To become a volunteer is not an easy task, it requires mental and physical endurance to do the daily work as a Bears keeper (the bears guardian). We to have ensure the bears are well cared for, healthy and independent to be finally released them into the wild.
I am happy to be able to gain knowledge about these bears habitat and build civic awareness on their importance to our ecosystem & our future generations. Sadly, some of these bears have been caught by illegal hunters. These bears either being kept as pets or sold in the black market as exotic food and for medication purposes.
Poaching them and cutting trees for oil palm cultivation and development also led to the lost of their habitat.
Being a volunteer, I have also learned to recognize the sun bears closely and understand their behaviour.
During my volunteer work, my task was to decontaminate and cleaned the bear cage, feed them four times a day. During these time, I was able to see the bears closely. In addition, we also provide enrichment for the bears so they have activities. I've made two enrichment for the bears called ONG puzzle block and ONG swinging tyre which you can see in the picture.
